Private Tutors for Children - Through the Eyes of the Pupils

  • The voices that matter most

What are the benefits of private tutors for children? Perhaps it’s time to give the pupils a chance to express their views. Reviewing this term’s progress with four of my tutees produced some interesting comments about their experience with Genie Tutors and elsewhere.

This is what Selina, Sam, Faheem and Jason had to say when I asked them about the progress they had made, how the tuition helped and whether they could compare Genie to other tuition they had had.

  • Sam – Year 5

“I like being able to try harder work than I get at school sometimes. In tuition, I’ve had a go at doing year 6 SATs papers and I did well – so I feel confident about trying new things. I like being able to share the new stuff I’ve learned with the group. We all get on well and help each other. I went to a place where we worked on computers all the time. It was OK, but I couldn’t really ask any questions and I could have done all that at home. I like working with other pupils and a teacher better.”

  • Faheem Year 5

“I’ve learned to handle different sorts of problems from the ones I’ve done before. The practice for 11+ has shown me that the format of questions can vary a lot. We don’t practise verbal and non-verbal reasoning at school in the same way, so I feel tuition is helping me understand what I need to do for the 11+. I had a personal tutor for a while, but I prefer being part of a group. Working together can be helpful and it’s fun.”

  • Jason Year 4

“Working in a group with pupils who are a year older than I am has helped me tackle harder work – I enjoy the challenges. My teacher at school says I’ve grown up a lot – it’s helped my confidence a lot. I don’t worry about it when I have to speak out in class anymore. I’ve been chosen as the school council representative for my class at school and I think that’s because I’m confident now. That’s because of tuition; I know I can say what I think. I think private tutors for children can be really helpful. I don’t even mind that it means studying on Saturday!”
