What are the Benefits of Group Work?

What are the Benefits of Group Work?

I am often asked what are the benefits of group work. As a former Primary school teacher, former one to one tutor and now director of Genie Tutors I have pulled together research to back up what prompted me to launch Genie Tutors in 2009.

Do you feel that class size affects the quality of learning your child receives?

In January 2016, 540,000 primary school pupils in English state funded schools were in classes with 31 or more students. In secondary schools the number was around 300,000. Class size isn’t a new phenomena – the numbers have been in the hundreds of thousands since records began in 2006. Is the class size situation going to improve?Your guess is as good as any. However, if being in a large class is impacting on your child’s learning potential you are right to be concerned.   https://fullfact.org/education/primary-class-sizes-england-and-wales/

Does class size affect learning?

There has been a considerable amount of research on the affect of class size on learning. There is no definitive answer to the question asked. Teachers, unions, parents and some academics argue that smaller classes mean better teaching and learning. Advisers, policymakers and politicians argue that class size is not important. The latter group cite high performing education systems like those in east Asia that focus on better teachers and not class sizes. They omit to say that Asian education systems do well due to high levels of parental support, cultural factors that favour education and importantly the prevalence of private tutoring.

Who is right – Teachers or Politicians?

Are teachers wrong and their view self serving? or are politicians attempting to justify the effect of budgetary constraints on education?  Perhaps the answer is that schools are being asked to deliver more than they can given the resources at their disposal.

Is more money the answer?

The government is spending £555 million a year on training new teachers but only £36 million on retention and development. In January 2018 the public account committee admonished the education department for not foreseeing the shortage of teachers. More teachers are leaving the profession and pupil numbers are rising. The situation will probably  not improve for some time.  Maybe there is enough money but it is not being spent wisely.

Private tuition

Private tuition can be provided either on a 1 on 1 basis or in small groups. Many  feel that 1 on 1 is better because it gives the full attention of the tutor. Something lacking in schools with larger class sizes.

Research undertaken by the University of New South Wales suggests that there are benefits to small group tuition. .https://teaching.unsw.edu.au/small-group-teaching

Small group tuition can:

  • improve subject knowledge.
  • allow children to discover and engage with others making learning more fun.
  • help children with their attitudes  and ideas about the subject matter.
  • help develop a willingness to share ideas.
  • provide opportunities  to exchange ideas with new friends.
  • encourage independent learning – a thirst for knowledge.
  • help develop skills in problem-solving, communication, interpersonal relations, teamwork, team leadership and lifelong learning skills.

Performance of Schools and Colleges

How is your school or college performing?

The performance of schools and colleges has recently been published.

The government spends lots of time and tax payer’s money looking at how to improve the quality of education in our schools. The importance of providing a good standard of education to our children is recognised. Children need motivation and confidence to be the best they can be.

The performance of schools and colleges is dependent on many factors. The only consistent factor parents can identify is the role of the teacher, whose abilities and skill set, knowledge and enthusiasm are crucial in determining the success or otherwise of the children they teach.

The questions government ask are always the same:

  • How can we improve the performance of schools and colleges?
  • How can we improve quality of teaching and learning?

The questions that parents often ask are:

  • How can we make our children more motivated and competitive?
  • How can we help our children achieve the exam grades they need?

You can find out how your school or college is performing by clicking on the link below.

https://www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk/schools-by-type?step=default&table=schools&region=330&geographic=la&for=primary

As  parents we know exam grades matter.  Good grades open doors to college, apprenticeships, A Levels and University. We want our children to be happy and perform to the best of their ability.

What can you do if you feel that your school or college may not be bringing out the full potential of your child?

You can talk to Genie Tutors.

English is a rich and ever changing language. Words take on a variety of meanings dependent upon context and the structure of the sentences in which they appear.

I rode my bike down the road and then I rowed my boat.

A good example of how confusing the English Language can be. Three words sounding the same. Different meanings. Different spelling. It illustrates the importance of understanding the subject in order to communicate effectively.

GCSE English provides a firm foundation in the subject.

Birmingham has a proud Literary history.

Author J.R.R Tolkein famed for The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings books, found inspiration for his stories during his childhood in Birmingham. His parents were from Birmingham and he lived in various places, including Sarehole –  now part of the suburb of Hall Green – as well as Kings Heath, Moseley, Edgbaston and Rednal. Sarehole was the model for the Shire and its rustic folk the basis for the hobbits.

The Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry, creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, was a curate at Kings Norton from 1940 to 1946. While living there he invented stories featuring trains – based on his experiences hearing the engines puffing along the railway line at Kings Norton – to entertain his son during a bout of measles.

Maths and The Industrial Rise of Birmingham

Canals were the motorways of their time. They fuelled the industrial rise of the city. Maths was required to design and build them. The application of maths made Birmingham.

Birmingham has a proud tradition of innovation in science and engineering. Its scientists, engineers and business owners understood the importance of maths in explaining the way the world works. Their knowledge and application of maths shaped the future.

The Birmingham suburbs of Harborne and Edgbaston grew out of this innovation. They were places for the ‘movers and shakers’ of the 19th and  early 20th century science, industry and commerce to live, think and create the foundations of the modern world. Without them and their understanding of the importance of Maths in everyday life – Birmingham would not be the  proud multicultural city we know today.

Children Explore Learning

Children Love to Explore Learning – So why might they be struggling?

Children explore learning all the time and find out about new places, new people, new ideas so why might a child be struggling at school? It could lack of focus, motivation or confidence, there could be some emotional issue that’s holding them back or they may have simply fallen behind and are finding it difficult to get back to where they were.

Every parent wants their child to do better so whatever the reason, if your child isn’t getting the results you know they can achieve, private tuition can help your child improve in lessons and at exam time. Sometimes exploring unfamiliar areas can be a little scary and guidance can provide invaluable help.

Your Guide to Exploring and Learning

A Genie Tutor is your child’s guide to the worlds of Maths and English to help them explore learning and have their potential unlocked. The key to Genie Tutors success is summed up in three words:
Explore Learning - AssessDevelopProgress
Every child starts with a free trial session. Our qualified and experienced teachers undertake a comprehensive assessment of your child. This gives us insight into their background, academic ability and an understanding of their interests. There are many reasons why some children struggle with certain subjects. The more we know about your child, the more effective our help can be. Based on the assessment we develop a programme of personalised tuition to help your child progress. The free trial lesson gives our qualified teachers an opportunity to understand your child but more importantly it gives your child the opportunity to get to know us.

Highly Qualified Education Professionals and Teachers

Our tuition sessions are ‘face to face’ with a highly qualified and experienced teachers. Our carefully selected teachers listen to your child and take time to understand difficulties. We then help him or her to explore and improve understanding. We believe that this approach to learning offers a far more rewarding experience for your child than a computer based approach which offers very little in the way of student teacher interaction.

Should you wish for a computer based learning element to your child’s tuition then Genie Tutors can offer access to our homework portal which provides extra work, beyond that set by the tutor, for your child together with a regular online assessment of your child progress.

At Genie Tutors your child can benefit from high quality face to face tuition and have access to our portal providing addition work.
After every session we’ll share with you the progress your child has made, listen to your views and discuss how we can develop in the weeks to come.

We support, motivate and challenge. This will help your child to overcome academic problems, unlock potential and start to get the results deserved. Our goal – to build confident, fearless explorers who are hungry to explore learning – so request your call back now.

Tuition with Genie – Charlie

“In Year 3, Charlie was having terrible problems with literacy” according to dad, Graham

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

His difficulties were becoming more and more apparent, and according to dad, Graham, he was getting frustrated and ‘stroppy’.

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]He started tuition with Genie and over the course of Year 4, made tremendous progress. “Charlie was struggling with all aspects of English – grammar, reading and creative writing – and his handwriting was so bad that he hated picking up a pen. While the school did offer some focused writing groups, it was a temporary support and didn’t give him what he needed to improve long term.

His older brother had gone through the 11+ with Genie, so when Charlie started having difficulties, it was our first port of call. He started tuition towards the end of Year 3 and although initially he didn’t like his sessions (mainly because they were on a Saturday morning which meant that he missed going to the football with his brother), he quickly began to flourish.

The first sign that he was improving came from the school. His teacher told us his attitude had changed – he was more focused and motivated. Charlie has a stubborn streak and when he can’t do something, he can get really stroppy. But here he was, starting to contribute to his English class and put forward his ideas willingly. We couldn’t quite believe it.

Over the course of Year 4, he progressed enormously. We have a friend who’s a headmistress and she independently confirmed to us just how impressive his progress has been. He’s now where he should be in both English and Maths and we’ve been told he’ll hit his targets in both subjects. His handwriting is brilliant now and he loves going to his sessions, probably because his confidence has improved so much.

Genie Tutors Bromsgrove – Olivia

“Olivia is a Year 10 student who’s had longstanding difficulties with Maths. In just a few months with Genie, she’s gone up two grades and moved up a level at school. Her mum, Julie says that they are now seeing a steady improvement.

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

For some reason, Olivia had a mental block when it came to Maths. She was good at all her other subjects – particularly English, French and History – but with Maths, it didn’t matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t get to grips with it. It got worse when she went to high school and in a class of 30+, she wasn’t getting any individual attention.

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]It was really knocking her confidence and she’d get frustrated, which made the situation even worse. I saw an advert in the local paper for Genie Tutors and contacted Ben at the Bromsgrove branch. Olivia immediately took to him; he showed great empathy and understanding towards her and her situation.

They built a rapport from the start – the fact that he was able to give her so much individual attention was important and helped her to build confidence really quickly. In just a few weeks, she was tackling Maths problems that she wouldn’t have been able to cope with before. Within a term, she’d gone from an F to a D in a test! I think Olivia expected a miracle and of course this hasn’t happened, but we are seeing improvements every week and Ben, her personal tutor, gives us feedback after each session without fail.

The style of teaching is completely different from school and Olivia loves the lessons and finds them fun, even though this was a subject she used to dread. The school has now moved her from Foundation to a higher level and her teacher recently emailed me to say that she’s sure she’ll be able to achieve a B at GCSE. I’m thrilled and I can’t believe we’ve seen results so quickly! We’ve arranged that she’ll attend some extra sessions over the summer which will give her some grounding in exam techniques and help her overcome her nerves and build her confidence even more. She desperately wants to be a nurse so she has to do well in English, Maths and Science. If she can get a B at GCSE Maths, she’ll be able to fulfil her ambitions and that’s priceless.

Genie Tutors in Birmingham

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Dalil is a Year 10 pupil from Ward End in Birmingham. He began private tuition with Genie at the beginning of the year, and his mum, Shamim, has seen considerable improvement in both his grades and his attitude towards his studies.

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

Dalil is a bright boy, but he wasn’t pushing himself and he’d been getting grades that were pretty mediocre. By the time he started his GCSE year, I was getting really quite concerned and wondered if some extra tuition might help. I have a busy job (Shamim is a Biomedical Scientist at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital) and didn’t have time help him myself, so I started looking round for a private tutor.

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]I met a couple of tutors that were recommended by the school. Sharon at Genie was one of them and I liked her immediately – she came over and we had a long chat about Dalil, how he was doing and what we felt he needed to achieve. I had assumed that one-to-one tutoring would be more effective than group tuition, but Sharon told me this wasn’t the case. She explained that research has proved that in a group, children get ideas from each other and it stimulates them more – there’s also an element of competition and that makes them try harder.

When I asked Dalil how he felt, he was enthusiastic about the idea of learning in a group, so we enrolled him in English tuition just after the new year. After a few weeks, we decided that he could do with some help in Science too so he goes twice a week now and really enjoys it. It was only when I went to the next parents’ evening that I realised how much difference the extra tuition had made. Every one of his teachers said they’d seen a big change in his attitude; he was more motivated, he was pulling his weight in class and achieving more.

They didn’t know how or why but they all agreed that there’d been a change in him. Dalil recently sat his mock GCSEs and although he’d been predicted D grades for Chemistry, Biology and Physics, he turned round a B in Physics, an A in Biology and an A* in Chemistry! We couldn’t believe it! We’re still waiting for his English to catch up but I’m sure that it will.” I’m confident that he’ll do well in his exams now. He’s happier at school, more motivated than he ever was and he’s actually enjoying his studies![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][us_cta title=”To learn more about getting results like Dalil” color=”custom” bg_color=”#fd8209″ text_color=”#000000″ btn_link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.genietutors.co.uk%2Frequest-a-callback%2F|||” btn_label=”Request a call back”][/us_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row]
